On the 14th of June, 2023, Black Professionals Scotland organized an empowering event called “Steps to Success” at the Aegon Offices in Edinburgh. Co-hosted by Aegon/Aegon UK, the event aimed to provide valuable insights and guidance to Black professionals in their career journeys. With keynote speaker, Kyle Murtagh, a renowned public speaking coach, the event proved to be a resounding success, offering attendees a wealth of knowledge and practical advice.
Overall, the “Steps to Success” event was a remarkable achievement. From the meticulous planning to the flawless execution, it was evident that the organizers had gone to great lengths to ensure a memorable experience for all participants. The ambiance was vibrant, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and engagement.
Among the various activities and speakers, the CV review and interview preparation sessions left a lasting impression on attendees. These sessions provided Black professionals with invaluable guidance and support, empowering them to excel in real-life interview scenarios. The opportunity to receive personalized feedback and advice was particularly appreciated, as it helped attendees refine their skills and boost their confidence.
The event also offered a valuable opportunity to learn new concepts and gain fresh insights. During one of the presentations, Kyle Murtagh introduced the concept of “SEO” – Smile, Eye contact, and Openness. This simple yet powerful acronym encapsulated the essence of effective communication and personal branding. It served as a reminder to always present oneself with a warm smile, maintain strong eye contact and project an open and approachable demeanor.
Throughout the event, several speakers shared impactful messages, but one quote resonated with attendees: “Remember that during interviews, you are not the only one being interviewed; even the company is also being interviewed by you to see if they're a good fit for you.” This quote served as a powerful reminder for Black professionals to approach job interviews with confidence and the understanding that they have the right to assess potential employers as well.
