As we continue celebrating the journeys of our Black Interns Programme participants, we turn the spotlight to Daniel Olanrewaju, a final-year undergraduate at the University of Edinburgh whose curiosity, creativity and determination are shaping an exciting path in investment management.
Getting to Know Daniel Beyond the Numbers
Q: Before we talk about your internship, who is Daniel outside the world of finance?
Daniel: “I’m someone who’s always trying to understand how the finance world works beneath the surface. But beyond that, I love creativity and service, whether I’m listening to music, watching football or volunteering as a videographer at my church. Those moments ground me. They remind me who I am outside university and why I’m drawn to work that blends curiosity, insight, and real-world impact.”
Inside His Internship at Walter Scott & Partners
Q: What was the experience like stepping into the Investment Performance team?
Daniel: “Honestly, it surpassed my expectations. The environment was approachable and genuinely supportive. Senior team members took time to share knowledge and I wasn’t just watching, I was trusted.”
From day one, Daniel was assigned a mix of day-to-day processes and more complex responsibilities typically handled by experienced team members. The hands-on exposure quickly became one of the defining parts of his journey.
A Standout Moment: Seeing His Work Come Alive
Q: Was there a moment during the internship that truly stayed with you?
Daniel: “Definitely. Seeing my analysis, sector-level portfolio performance for one of the firm’s funds, shown in a company-wide investment research meeting. It was a moment of clarity. My work mattered.”
For a young professional exploring the world of investment management, that level of visibility and impact is unforgettable.
How the Internship Shaped His Future
By the end of the internship, Daniel felt more certain than ever about where he belonged.
Daniel: “The culture, the people, the work, it all gave me clarity. Investment management is where I want to be.”
With newfound confidence, he is now actively applying for investment graduate programmes, ready for the next chapter.
His Advice for Future Applicants
Q: What would you tell someone thinking about applying to the Black Interns Programme?
Daniel: “Go for it. Do your research, understand the organisation you’re applying to, and show genuine interest. People notice authenticity, it goes a long way.”
