On 29th April 2024, the IAmBlack Conference made history in Glasgow, marking a milestone for the Black community in Scotland and beyond. This ground-breaking event having Lloyds Banking Group as the headline sponsor, brought together professionals, students and businesses in an extraordinary showcase of talent, learning and opportunity.

The conference’s theme, Symbiosis, was brought to life throughout the day as employers and Black talent engaged in meaningful exchanges, fostering mutual growth and collaboration. From insightful masterclasses and panel discussions to interactive CV reviews and inspiring Q&A sessions, the energy and enthusiasm were unmistakable. As one attendee remarked, “The IAmBlack Conference wasn’t just an event—it was a movement.”

• 10 Business Pitches: Aspiring entrepreneurs pitched their ideas, with one winner receiving £1,000 to grow their business.

• £500 Donation: Contributed to a robotics project spearheaded by some of the young participants.

• 30 Businesses: Connected directly with Black talent, fostering future partnerships.

• 5 Black-Owned Businesses: Showcased and connected with their target audiences.

A Day to Remember

The IAmBlack Conference was more than a collection of numbers—it was a celebration of ambition and potential. Delegates filled each room to capacity, soaking up knowledge and inspiration from a stellar lineup of facilitators and speakers. The CV Review sessions alone helped over 200 attendees enhance their professional prospects, while young talents aged 13-17 gained invaluable exposure and experience.

One of the most memorable highlights was the Dragon’s Den-style pitch session, where entrepreneurs showcased their innovative ideas. The winner walked away with £1,000 in prize money, with ongoing support promised to all participants.

Changing the Narrative

Scotland’s ageing population poses a societal challenge, but the IAmBlack Conference demonstrated the vast potential within the Black community to shape the nation’s future. By harnessing this talent, BPU is committed to advancing both societal progress and economic prosperity.

Even the venue team was moved, stating, “We’ve never witnessed such energy and enthusiasm at a conference before.” That says it all!
