On October 22, 2024, Black Professionals UK (BPU) partnered with CodeBase to host a remarkable Black History Month celebration at CodeBase Stirling. The event brought together professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders to explore the richness of Black history and its impact on the future of Black talent in the UK.
Moderated by Enoch Adeyemi, the evening featured an insightful panel discussion with speakers Angie Mwafulirwa, Ikem Odikanekwu, Solomon Adeniji and Dr. Ajoke Modupeoluwa Ehimiyein. These leaders shared their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities Black professionals face, particularly in navigating business and recruitment in Scotland. A key takeaway was the false narratives Black businesses often encounter when trying to recruit locally. This sparked meaningful conversations on breaking stereotypes and promoting inclusion in the workplace.
One memorable moment was Ikem Odikanekwu’s statement, “If they can pronounce Schwarzenegger, they can pronounce Odikanekwu,” which drew smiles and applause from the audience, highlighting the need for cultural respect and representation.
The celebration was also a feast for the senses, with attendees enjoying jollof rice, plantain, chicken, puff puff, and more, adding a taste of African culture to the vibrant networking atmosphere.
Overall, attendees praised the event as “Fun, informative and full of networking opportunities.” The combination of engaging discussions, valuable insights, and the chance to connect with like-minded professionals made this Black History Month celebration a truly memorable experience. BPU and CodeBase succeeded in creating a community-driven event that celebrated Black excellence, resilience and the power of storytelling. It was an inspiring evening that left a lasting impact on everyone involved.
