About the Long Form Journalism team
The Long Form Journalism team is responsible for producing original and investigative journalism for BBC Scotland News. We make documentary films for Disclosure and Panorama shown on iPlayer and BBC One, long form podcast series for BBC Sounds and shorter investigative films for iPlayer, as well as written articles for BBC News Online and video content for social media.
Our investigative films have won the Royal Television Society’s Nations & Regions award for the last four out of five years and we have a formidable reputation for revealing great untold stories that make a difference to people’s lives.
We are committed to reaching new audiences and meeting changing audience habits with a focus on Digital content as well as continuing to deliver to audiences on linear platforms.
Purpose of role
This role of researcher will offer a chance to get involved in the production of long form journalism for BBC Scotland News. Expect to gain experience in everything from finding, pitching and developing story ideas, to conducting research and casting contributors. There will also be opportunities to assist on location and in an edit.
Responsibilities
- Support one or more production teams over the course of the internship in the production of a multiplatform investigation;
- Generate and develop story ideas;
- Conduct research and fact-check scripts;
- Meet potential contributors and scout for potential filming locations;
- Create short form video content and/or write online content (depending on skillset).
What we’re looking for
Previous journalistic and/or filmmaking/audio experience would be beneficial but is not essential. We are seeking new ideas and fresh perspectives on stories. This role will suit someone with a positive attitude, an inquiring mind, great people skills and an eye for detail. An understanding of and commitment to the BBC’s rules on impartiality is key, so you must be willing to look at all sides of a story and challenge assumptions.
We are a small and welcoming team who support one another and muck in together to get the job done. That sometimes requires flexibility with working hours, though we have the benefit of being one of the few areas in News that can offer some home-working.
Benefits of working with us
You will gain an insight into investigative journalism and long form storytelling, working with some of the best in the business.
